Gearing up for Lent: Pointers on Prayer
Pray like you mean it:
"All difficulties in prayer can be traced to one cause: praying as if God were absent."
-Theresa of Avila
Short prayers are perfectly acceptable:
"Much more is accomplished by a single word of the Our Father said from our heart, than by the whole prayer repeated many times in haste and without attention."
-Theresa of Avila
Meditating on Scripture completes the conversation begun in prayer:
"Prayer is talking to God. Holy reading is listening to God speak back."
- Theophan the Recluse
What happens as we learn to pray:
"The more we get what we now call "ourselves" out of the way and let Him take us over, the more truly ourselves we become. . . . I am not, in my natural state, nearly so much of a person as I like to believe: most of what I call "me" can be very easily explained. It is when I turn to Christ, when I give myself up to His Personality, that I first begin to have a real personality of my own."
- C.S. Lewis
